As long summer nights draw to a close, adjusting the bedtime routines to a regular schedule is crucial for good mental health and a physical well-being. Going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time each morning will guarantee that your body will get the adequate amount of rest that it needs to function properly.

Most adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night while teenagers, younger children and infants need quite a bit more. Home environment, social and work obligations as well as personal preferences can have a strong impact on maintaining healthy sleep schedules.

Not getting adequate amounts of sleep each night can lead to daytime fatigue, drowsiness, headaches, poor memory, moodiness and other symptoms. Over time, there is an increased risk of suffering from high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, obesity and strokes with continuous sleep deprivation.

Follow these helpful tips on how to prepare your mind and body for a good night’s rest:

  • Turn off your smartphone and don’t use it once you have laid down in bed. An hour before going to sleep, avoid looking at the backlit screen from your cell phone, computer screen or television, as these tend to stimulate your brain and will keep you awake longer.

  • Avoid consuming food and drinks containing caffeine or sugar as well as alcoholic beverages a few hours before bedtime. Stimulants and alcohol can last for hours circulating in your blood and can keep you awake until your body metabolizes them.

  • Exercising several times per week is another way to help your body prepare for sleep and will help improve symptoms of insomnia. After healthy physical activity, your body will feel more relaxed which will help you fall asleep faster.

  • Set up an evening routine and do it every night before going to bed. This should include cleansing your face and hydrating, taking a warm bath, listening to soft instrumental music or doing slow, rhythmic body stretches. Do a breathing exercise with Lavender Essential Oil to help you relax and give you a better night’s sleep.

Create a nightly ritual to follow, one that will mentally and physically signal your body that it’s time to wind down for sleep. Enjoy your ZZZZZ’s…
